The Installation Brief

The venue has a quantity of old speakers around the room. This is fine when it is just used for speech but when live entertainment with Indian percussion instruments are used, the system could not cope. Performers could not be heard clearly, or hear themselves.

The Solution

Although the space is more akin to a large concert venue, the budget for such a system was simply out of the question. We opted for a quantity of Wharfedale Pro Sigma series 12” speakers. 4 were hung from the lighting truss above the stage with a further 4 down the room. We installed Wharfedale Pro Delta Sub bass speakers under the stage area. We used a quantity of Yamaha PX series power amplifiers to power the system. These were chosen for their reliability and their processing capabilities. We were able to programme each amplifier to do a specific job, for example split between controlling Hi/mid and bass by using the built in crossover capabilities. We utilised a quantity of the original speakers using them as foldback monitors. Again, we hung these from the trussing pointing back towards the stage. This enabled the performers to hear themselves.

The mixing desk had been controlled from the side of the stage. This created obvious issues when trying to mix the sound. We trailed a 24 way multi core to a space ‘front of house’. The big old mixing desk and rack of equipment was replaced with a compact Yamaha MG20XU, which has 16 inputs and built in effects. We supplied Shure BLX series UHF wireless twin microphones also.
